SEED SAVING

If you grow hybrid seeds they are unlikely to grow into exactly the same plant they came from so it is best to save seeds from plants you know and have been growing here for several generations. Saving seeds is the cornerstone of an environmentally sustainable garden. Saving your own seeds helps ensure a variety of plants endure, genetic diversity is maintained and gives you the ability to grow plants suited to the local environment. It also means you do not need to buy hybrid or genetically modified seeds. If possible grow seeds from heirlooms and old fashioned varieties. Another benefit is you will get thousands of seeds from one plant so there will be plenty to sow and share amongst family and friends.
Start with seeds from cucumbers, beans, peas, tomatoes and melons as they are easy to harvest and store. As each plant is different it is important to know the individual plant.

Cucumbers & Tomatoes -Remove pulp & seeds from ripe fruit & cover with water. Stir daily for 2-3 days & remove dead seeds that float to top. Good seeds drop to bottom. Rinse and dry on waxed paper for a week.
Melons -(not seedless!) Remove seeds and wash away pulp then dry on waxed paper turning daily for about a week.
Storing -Put seeds in a paper bag or envelope and label with name and date harvested. Store away from direct sun and in a cool dry place with consistent temperature until ready to sow.
