Benching Exhibits at General Meetings

BENCHING SCHEDULE

EXHIBITORS PLEASE NOTE:

All pots must be able to be easily lifted by benching staff.

1  a. Orchid – in a pot

    b. Orchid – 1 cut

2 a. Single flower head – 1 stem with or without foliage – no shrub, tree or vine.     

b. Multiple flower head – 1 stem/spike/cut – no shrub, tree or vine accepted.  

3 a. Shrub, tree or vine – 1 single flower head– not an Australian native.      

    b. Shrub, tree or vine – multiple flower head – not an Australian native.  

4. a. Foliage – 1 cut of foliage.

    b. Mixed Foliage – 1 stem of each kind, maximum of 6.

5.    Cut FlowersMixed – 1 stem of each kind –maximum of 6.

6.    Cut flowers – 1 kind – minimum of 3 (NND) (Not Necessarily Distinct ie. Not necessarily the same colour.)

7 a. Australian Native Flowers – collection of 3 or more.

   b. Australian Native flowers – 1 cut or stem.

8 a. Bromeliad – grown in container – no larger than 25cm.  ( Pups no taller than1/3 of parent plant.)

b. Bromeliad – related species, e.g.Tillandsia, Cryptanthus, Orthophylum, Sincoraea.

9.    Plant/s in flower – grown in container – no larger than 25cm

10.   Plant/s for foliage – grown in container – no larger than 25cm in diameter.

11.  A Fern – in a pot no larger than 25cm diameter.

12.  Plant/s in flower – in a hanging container. The plant must hang over the edge of the container

13.  Plant/s for foliage – in a hanging container. The plant must hang over the edge of the container

14 a. A single succulent or cactus – in a container – no larger   than 25cm.

    b. Succulents and/or cacti garden – in a container – no larger than 35cm.

15 a. Mixed Produce – in suitable container, e.g. tray or basket. Can include up to 3 cuts of herbs.                

     b. Produce – one variety only.

16 a. Monthly Feature – as specified in the diary. To be displayed in a clear glass container. Maximum 3 stems

17 a. Novice Floral Art – as specified in the diary.

     b. Senior Floral Art – as specified in the diary.

(No artificial flowers or greenery to be use in Floral Art displays.)

IN ORDER TO PREVENT A WATER HAZARD, please place your exhibit on a saucer.

.BENCHING RULES

1.    Cut flowers and foliage must be grown by exhibitor and pot plants must be owned by exhibitor for three months prior to        exhibiting.

2.    All exhibitors must be present for the entire meeting.

       Exhibits to be collected at the end of the meeting.

3.    Members may only enter ONE exhibit per class.

4.    Please check schedule notes for maximum pot size.

5.    Exhibitors are asked to fill in the folded entry slip provided and place under/on exhibit. Exhibitor’s name should face down with the name of the plant facing up, on display.

6.    Exhibitors may enter Lucky Bencher draw by writing their name in the benching book located near Section1 (Orchids). One entry per person, regardless of number of plants exhibited.

7.    ONLY Benching stewards are permitted to move exhibits.  Please seek assistance from stewards if space is a problem when placing an exhibit.    

8.    Exhibits in sections 2,3,4,5,6, and 7 must be exhibited in a clear glass container.

9.    Flowers and foliage for Floral Art section may be purchased but must be arranged by the exhibitor. (no artificial flowers or artificial greenery.)

       Promotion from Novice Section to Senior Section in Floral Art, is left to the discretion of the Benching Steward and/or committee.

10.  All exhibits must be tabled between 8.15am – 9.30am DST.

11.  A plant which wins 1st Prize in any section may not be entered again for the next 3 months.

12.  Points are awarded to the exhibits judged to be first and second in each section. 1st = 5 points.              2nd = 3 points.            

13.  Each month, the exhibit judged to be the overall Champion Exhibit, will receive an extra 10 points and a $20 voucher.  

14.  All Sections will be awarded 1st and 2nd place, scores will be tallied and the members with the highest score in each category will be rewarded at the end of the year.

15.  Each member who exhibits during the year (January – November) and gains 20 or more points, receives a reward at the end of the year.

16. At each meeting, after Judging and before Presentations, one exhibit that has not won a prize but is considered to be of merit will be chosen for the President’s Encouragement Award.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE JUDGE’S DECISION IS FINAL.

Members have decided that once a trophy is filled, it will not be replaced. However, a small keepsake trophy will be on offer in all sections.

Please return Perpetual Trophies to Benching Steward by November Meeting in preparation for Annual Presentation.

Perpetual Trophies are:

  • The Bev Everson Memorial Trophy is presented to the most successful exhibitor of Floral Art in the Senior Section.
  • The Kathallen Trophy will be presented to the most successful exhibitor in the Cactus & Succulent section.
  • The Twin towns & District Garden Club Novice Floral Art Trophy will be awarded to the most successful exhibitor in the Novice Floral Art section.
  • The Nell Jeffery Memorial Trophy will be awarded to the most successful exhibitor in the Cut Flowers section.
  • The Daphne Sellwood Trophy will be awarded to the most successful exhibitor in the Bromeliads section.
  • The Maria Goulding Memorial Trophy will be awarded to the most successful exhibitor in Produce section.
  • The Mieke Scoccimarro Trophy will be awarded for the most successful exhibitor in the Native section.
  • The Betty Morran Trophy will be awarded for the most successful exhibitor in the Foliage only section.
  • The Growing Together Trophy will be awarded for the most successful exhibitor for the Monthly Feature.
  • The Monika Ross Trophy will be awarded to the most successful exhibitor in the Potted Plants section.
