May 2011 DAYLILIES
February -Trim leaves to 10-12 inches. A handful of fertilizer and mulch will promote longer
flowering
April-May -Divide large clumps and those that have lost vigour. Do this at least every 3 years.
June-July -Cut back foliage to 6 inches. Mulch in areas with dry winters.
July – August A few sprinkles of Sulphur of Potash will help.
September-October Or when winter is over. Scrape back mulch and fertilise with a handful of either Blood
& Bone or Dynamic Lifter. Use slightly less of a general fertiliser. A little Dolomite can be beneficial too.
Water at least weekly.
Day Lillies are virtually pest free but be on the lookout for Spider mites (under the leaves) and Aphids (down
the foliage) during late winter and early spring. Spray with a systemic insecticide if you wish though the
Aphids will not spread to other plants and will virtually disappear later in spring.
Bonus All parts of the Day Lilly are edible. Swollen roots and new shoots as a cooked vegetable, blooms in
salad and mature unopened buds in stir-frys.
